1st Anouncement of the 3rd IMYA

Dear Yeast Community, dear Colleagues!

The third International Meeting on Yeast Apoptosis (IMYA) will be held from August 18 to 22, 2004, at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Salzburg University in Austria. The first two international meetings on yeast apoptosis took place in Portugal (2002) and the Slovak Republic (2003) and were both very successful. About 60 participants from all parts of Europe and overseas joined these meetings and the lectures and discussions were extremely interesting and stimulating. The field seems to be at a cutting edge of current yeast biology and is progressing very rapidly.

The specific goal for the coming meeting is to discuss the recent advances and aspects of the following topics:
-The biochemical mechanisms of apoptosis
-The role of yeast apoptosis in cellular aging
-Genomics and proteomics of apoptosis
-Induction of apoptosis in pathogenic fungi
-Cell cycle checkpoints and the entry into the apoptotic pathway
-DNA damage and apoptosis
-The role of the origin recognition complex in yeast apoptosis
-An overview of the current state of research about apoptosis in protists
-The role of lipid-signaling in yeast apoptosis.

The following prominent scientists working in the field of yeast apoptosis and related topics have confirmed their participation:

Bill Burhans (Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY, USA)
Ian Dawes (University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia)
Pidder Jansen-Dürr (Institute for Biomedical Aging Research, Innsbruck, Austria)
Birthe Fahrenkrog (Basel Biocenter, Basel, Switzerland)
Kai-Uwe Fröhlich (University of Graz, Graz, Austria)
David Goldfarb (University of Rochester, NY, USA)
Michal Jazwinski (Louisiana State University Health Science Center, New Orleans, LA, USA)
Jordan Kolarov (Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia)
Frank Madeo (University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany)
Robert Hongyuan Yang (National University of Singapore, Singapore)

The format of the meeting will include morning and evening sessions consisting of four 30-minutes plenary lectures as well as two or three 15-minute short lectures, selected from the abstracts, per session. In addition, there will be two poster sessions, held in the afternoons.

We strongly encourage you to register and submit abstracts for the meeting electronically at our web site. If you are unable to register or submit abstracts electronically, registration materials are available from our website. Status of abstracts will be posted on our web site (www.yeast-apoptosis.org) as soon as decisions have been made by the international organizing committee.

We hope to see you in Salzburg, which is located at the border between Austria and Bavaria and is world-famous for its baroque architecture, beautiful surroundings and for its art and culture. The Salzburg Music Festival, often described as the greatest and most important music festival in the world, will be open during the time of the meeting and you have the opportunity to attend performances of opera, plays and concerts of the highest artistic standards.
